Why the last Harry Potter movie seems like the marking of the end of my childhood.

In second grade a book found its way into my hands by reasons unremembered. That book was Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone. You know the rest, like every other kid at the time I was absolutely enthralled with this fictitious world for basically the next decade. I would wait in painful anticipation for every new book and movie and be overwhelmed with joy when they were finally released, up until high school when that obsession toned down a considerable amount. At heart I still loved the series and when the final movie was released I felt differently than I did with the others. Instead of an obvious eagerness towards viewing it I had a vague sense of apprehension and reluctance. I waited a full week until I went to see it, and when I did I found it to be quite good but that’s not the point. It was one of the saddest...

NBC’s Must See TV is ON again!

NBC’s Thursday comedy night is back in full tilt with season premieres of Community, Parks & Recreation, and The Office (minus Michael Scott + new boss [!!!]) The end of last season left us all in anticipation for Thursday night to give us the answers we’ve been waiting for all summer regarding whether or not Pierce would return in Community, Ben & Leslie’s relationship in Parks & Rec, and of course what The Office would be like without Michael Scott.

Community:

For an entire five seconds, the show does a great job of scaring us all into believing that Pierce was not returning. But then he shows his beautiful chin dimple and all fear is lifted. In the episode, there’s not tons of laugh out loud moments in this show (though when they come they come hard) but I think that it sets up what looks like to be...

Bon Iver / James Blake

The first time I listened to James Blake was soon after his self titled album came out earlier this year and immediately I made comparisons to Bon Iver. I then proceeded to have a long hypothetical conversation with my friends regarding the outcome of James Blake / Bon Iver collaboration. We were intrigued at the thought of Justin Vernon’s voice combined with James Blake’s electronic tendencies but at the same time knew that if Justin could be flawlessly featured on a Kanye West album he’d be able to do almost anything musically. At the time (January) it seemed outlandish and I don’t think that anybody this side of Fall Creek thought that they’d actually collaborate. But, little did we know that our imaginations were too weak and our hopes were too low. On the track, “Fall Creek Boys Choir” James Blake and Bon Iver...

Neighborhoods by Blink 182 has been leaked

It’s official. Neighborhoods by Blink 182 has been leaked. It’s been eight years since the last release from this Southern California band and it’s been worth the wait. Sporting fourteen tracks, the Mark, Tom, and Travis show has been kicked into full gear. Here’s a track by track commentary on the album:

  1. Ghost On The Dance Floor – Tom’s on lead vocals (while Mark adds some killer harmonies) with a melody in the verse that is reminiscent of Box Car Racer’s “There Is”. Not the best choice for an opening track but it’s still a very touching track that could be a single sometime down the line.
  2. Natives – UH-OH. Tom’s pulling out the franticly delicate tapping riff a-la 1994’s “M+M’s”. The rest of the song morphs into an upbeat jaunt with Mark & Tom harmonizing and...

30 Minutes or Less

How do you turn a creepy thriller movie type plotline into a consistently funny dark(ish) comedy? That’s a great question for Ruben Flesher and the cast of 30 Minutes Or Less. In this new movie, lead character Nick, played by Jesse Eisenberg, is just a modest pizza delivery guy delivering a pizza to an admittedly sketchy place gets kidnapped by two psychos (Danny McBride and Nick Swardson) before they strap a bomb to him and instruct him to rob a bank. If he doesn’t do it in less than twelve hours then, the bomb explodes along with the rest of his body. Considering that is a rather frightening concept, Nick freaks out and immediately recruits his friend Chet who’s played by the outstanding actor/comedian from Human Giant and Parks & Recreation, Aziz Ansari. The characters deal with problems that they’ve had since before...
